SSL certificate not activating
Use this guide when certificate provisioning remains pending, the Dashboard displays a certificate error, or the HTTPS column does not show SSL Enabled.
This guide covers domain ownership verification, DNS configuration, propagation, and certificate-provisioning failures.
If HTTPS already shows SSL Enabled, follow Troubleshoot SSL and HTTPS errors instead.
What this guide covers
This guide helps you check:
- Whether your site is ready for SSL activation
- Whether DNS is pointing to EDGE
- Whether DNS propagation is still in progress
- Whether the domain can be verified
- What to do if the certificate status is pending or failed
When to use
Use this guide when:
- Your SSL certificate is still pending
- HTTPS is not available after setting up EDGE
- The Dashboard shows an SSL or certificate error
- DNS was changed recently
- The domain does not appear to be verified yet
Prerequisites
Before SSL can activate, make sure:
- The site has been added to Pressidium EDGE
- The domain has been added to the correct site
- DNS records point to the values shown in the Pressidium Dashboard
- DNS has had time to propagate
- The domain is active and reachable
SSL cannot activate until the domain can be verified.
How SSL activation works
The standard EDGE-managed SSL flow is:
- Add the domain to the correct EDGE site.
- Select Free by Pressidium.
- Add the domain ownership verification record at the active DNS provider.
- Complete domain ownership verification.
- Wait for EDGE to provision the certificate.
- Add the traffic-routing records shown in the Dashboard.
- Confirm that HTTPS shows SSL Enabled and test the domain over HTTPS.
Check the SSL status
Open the site in the Pressidium Dashboard and review the domain or SSL status.
Common states may include:
- Pending: the certificate is still being provisioned or the domain is not fully verified yet.
- Active: the certificate is issued and HTTPS should work.
- Error: certificate provisioning failed or the domain could not be verified.
If the status is Active, but the browser still shows a warning, use the SSL Troubleshooting guide instead.
Check DNS configuration
SSL activation depends on DNS.
In your DNS provider, confirm that:
- The correct domain or subdomain is configured
- The record type is correct
- The record value matches the value shown in the Pressidium Dashboard
- There are no typos in the domain or value
- There are no duplicate or conflicting records
- Both the root domain and
wwwversion are configured if you use both
Important: Update DNS records in the active DNS provider. The active provider is the one controlled by your domain’s nameservers.
Check DNS propagation
If DNS was changed recently, propagation may still be in progress.
During propagation, some locations may see the new EDGE records while others still see the old values. This can delay SSL activation.
To check propagation:
- Use a DNS lookup tool to check the domain from multiple locations.
- Confirm the returned value matches the EDGE value shown in the Dashboard.
- Check both the root domain and
wwwversion if both are configured. - Wait for propagation to complete before making more changes.
Avoid making repeated DNS changes unless you find a clear mistake. Multiple changes can make troubleshooting harder.
See DNS Propagation Delays for more details.
Check the domain in a browser
Visit the site using HTTPS:
https://example.com
Replace example.com with your domain.
Then check:
- Whether the site loads
- Whether the browser shows a lock icon
- Whether the browser shows a certificate warning
- Whether the certificate details match your domain
If the certificate is active but the browser shows a warning, continue with the SSL certificate errors guide.
Common issues and solutions
Certificate status is pending
A pending SSL certificate usually means EDGE is still waiting for DNS or domain verification.
Check:
- DNS points to EDGE
- DNS has propagated
- The domain is added to the correct site
- The domain is active
- There are no conflicting DNS records
After confirming the records are correct, wait and check the status again.
Certificate status shows error
An error usually means the domain could not be verified or certificate provisioning failed.
Check:
- The DNS records in your DNS provider.
- The active nameservers for the domain.
- The domain status in the Dashboard.
- Any error message shown in the Dashboard.
- Whether the domain is expired, suspended, or blocked.
If the error remains after DNS is corrected and propagated, contact Pressidium Support.
DNS looks correct but SSL is still pending
First, confirm that the public DNS result matches the value shown in the Pressidium Dashboard.
If it does, the certificate may still be provisioning. Check again after some time.
If the status does not change, contact Pressidium Support with the domain, DNS values, and a screenshot of the SSL status.
HTTPS does not load after SSL becomes active
If SSL is active but HTTPS still does not work, the issue may no longer be certificate activation.
Check:
- The site is reachable at the origin
- The domain is attached to the correct EDGE site
- There are no redirect loops
- The browser warning is not caused by mixed content
- The certificate matches the domain
Use the SSL Troubleshooting guide for browser warnings and HTTPS issues after activation.
Verification
SSL activation is complete when:
- The Dashboard shows the certificate as active
- The domain loads over
https:// - The browser does not show a certificate warning
- The certificate details match the domain
- Both root and
wwwversions work if both are configured
Need help?
Contact Pressidium Support if:
- The certificate stays pending after DNS is correct and propagated
- The certificate status shows an error
- The domain resolves correctly but SSL does not activate
- You are unsure which DNS record or domain status is blocking activation
Include:
- Site name
- Domain name
- DNS provider
- Current nameservers
- DNS record type and value
- Approximate time DNS was changed
- Screenshot of DNS records
- Screenshot of the Dashboard SSL or domain status
- Browser error message, if shown
Where to go next
- Review DNS Propagation Delays if DNS was changed recently and results differ by location.
- Review DNS Configuration Problems if the domain resolves to the wrong destination or does not resolve at all.
- Review SSL Troubleshooting if the certificate is active but the browser still shows a warning.
- Review Site Not Loading After Setup if DNS and SSL look correct but the site does not load.
- Open a Support Request if SSL still does not activate after completing the checks in this guide.
